Chicago Rawhide was founded in 1878 in Chicago, originally producing rawhide leather goods such as belts, lacing, ropes and similar items. Over time the company expanded into leather gears and, in 1914, produced leather components for the Ford Model T. A key innovation came in 1928 when Chicago Rawhide patented its “Perfect Oil Seal,” an integrated leather seal that set new standards for grease retention and contaminant exclusion. In 1971 the first Wave lip seal was patented, enhancing sealing performance under demanding rotating shaft conditions. In 1990, Chicago Rawhide was acquired by SKF, and since then its sealing technologies, materials, and design capabilities have been integrated into SKF’s broader industrial seals platform.

Today, the company specializes in high-performance industrial and automotive shaft seals, radial and axial seals, wear sleeves (Speedi-Sleeve), metal-face and cassette seals, V-rings, and other sealing solutions.
